Recruiting Rewind: A Look at the High School Class of 2009

by Earl Smith

It's time for my personal favorite feature of the offseason, D1CW's Recruiting Rewind.  As has been the case the past five seasons, we will take a look at a class of wrestlers five years after the collegiate careers began. The Class of 2009 has truly been a special group.  The top four point producers from this class surpass all totals from the previous classes.  After the top four this class levels off and is pretty comparable to the prior ones.

The Class of 2009 is similar to 2008 in that the wrestlers at the top of the original rankings, have generally had the best careers.  Four of the top five recruits from the Class of 2009 went on the become multiple-time NCAA Champions (David Taylor, Chris Perry, Kyle Dake, Ed Ruth). Overall the Class of 2009 featured five wrestlers who were multiple-time NCAA Champinos, a number that tops the legendary Class of 2005. The eight NCAA Champions in the Class of 2009 is second in the five years observed to that Class of 2005.

Prior to this season the highest point totals belonged to Iowa State's Jake Varner and Penn State Quentin Wright with 74.  Also an update from the Class of 2008.  With his 2014 NCAA Runner-Up finish Andrew Howe's point total is 73, which was second before factoring in the Class of 2009.

First lets take a look at the top 50 of Intermat's top 100 recruits from the Class of 2009/

Before we re-rank the Class of 2009 based on their collegiate careers, lets address three members of the Class of 2008 whose careers were just recently completed.  They all moved up significantly from their positions in the Recruiting Rewind of last season.

Andrew Howe (Wisconsin/Oklahoma) With Howe's Runner-Up finish at the Big 12 Championships and well as the NCAA's he earned an additional 16 points, taking his career total up to 73.  That increase puts him at second overall in the Class of 2008, instead of fourth place.

Tyler Graff (Wisconsin) Graff 2013-14 season saw him earn Runner-Up finished at both the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships.  That additional 19 points give him 59 for his career.  He entered 2013-14 in 9th place among the Class of 2008, but is now sitting in 5th place.

Travis Rutt (Wisconsin/Oklahoma) Rutt's Runner-Up finish at the Big 12 and qualifier status at NCAA's earned an additional 5 point, giving him 20 for his career.  He now is in 27th place in the Class of 2008.

Matt Brown (Penn State) While not done with his collegiate career, Matt Brown was able to move farther up in the Class of 2008.  Brown's 3rd Place Finish at the Big Ten's and 5th at NCAA's gives him 13 points to add onto his previous 20.  He now is in 13th place for the Class of 2008.
