Recruiting Rewind: A Look at the High School Class of 2008

by Earl Smith

It's time for my personal favorite feature of the offseason, D1CW's Recruiting Rewind.  As has been the case the past four seasons, we will take a look at a class of wrestlers five years after the collegiate careers began. The Class of 2008 is the focus this time around and it is truly an interesting group.  The top three "point scorers" post-career have accumulated three of the top four point totals in the four seasons D1CW has evaluated. However, once we get past the top wrestlers the group is not quite a deep as year's past.

In past recruiting classes evaluated in the Recruiting Rewind there have usually been a few top wrestlers who have emerged from the bottom of the high school rankings (or were never on them).  2008's class is not one of them.  The top five performers were all wrestlers who were ranked in the top 15 of their recruiting class five years ago.  This group also features five different wrestlers who won NCAA Championships at one time in their college career.  That number is about average compared to 2006 and 2007.  The number of multiple time NCAA Champions (three) is tops in the four years of Recruiting Rewind, a stat even the stacked Class of 2005 cannot top.  Ten wrestlers from the Class of 2008 were at least three time All-American's.  That is significantly less than 2005's 16, equals 2007 10 and is greater than 2006's 9.

Prior to this season the leading career point total belonged to Jake Varner of Iowa State with 74.  It may come as a bit of a surprise, but Penn State's 2x NCAA Champion Quentin Wright has matched that total of 74. Matt McDonough and Jordan Oliver's total of 69 is higher than every wrestler from the Classes of 2005-08 except Varner and Wright.

First lets take a look at the top 50 of Intermat's top 100 recruits from the Class of 2008.

Before we re-rank the Class of 2008 based on their collegiate careers, lets address three members of the Class of 2007 whose careers were just recently completed.  They all moved up significantly from their positions in the Recruiting Rewind of last season.

Dustin Kilgore (Kent State). With Kilgore's 4x MAC Title and NCAA Runner-Up Finish he moved from 14th in the Class of 2007 with 32 points to 7th with 48 points.

Jarod Trice (Central Michigan).  Trice's 6th place finish at NCAA's and MAC Runner-Up put him in 18th place with 30 points.  Last season he was in 26th place with 21 points.

Dom Bradley (Missouri). Bradley finished 4th in the country and took home a MAC Championship.  Originally he was 33rd overall with 16 points.  Now he sits in 19th place with 28 points.
