Recruiting Rewind: A Look at the High School Class of 2006

by Earl Smith

After a night of watching the NFL draft and weeks of being inundated by mock drafts and overall draft coverage, I present to you some of the closest things that DI wrestling has to offer; Recruiting!  A second look at the recruiting rankings for the High School Class of 2006, and then a re-ranking of the wrestlers based on their performance on the mat.  This is relevant because most of these wrestlers from this class have just exhausted their collegiate eligibility.

It is the second time that D1CW has presented a "Recruiting Rewind", last year we took a look at the Class of 2005.  The Class of 2006 is a sharp contrast to 2005.  The Class of 2005 featured sixteen wrestlers who were either 3 or 4-time All-American's, while the Class of 2006 had only eight. The Class of 2005 produced thirteen NCAA Champions while the Class of 2006 only has six.  The top wrestler from the Class of 2005 was Jake Varner who accumulated 74 points.  Varner and four other wrestlers earned more points than this year's top point scorer, Hodge Trophy winner Jordan Burroughs.

First, let's take a look at the top 50 of Intermat's top 100 recruits from the Class of 2006.
